Supply List: Painted Vacations Watercolor Supplies Instructor: Kathy Rennell Forbes Email: artbykrf@mindspring.com Palette of watercolor paints – suggest warm and cool of each primary plus black and viridian. (Yellow ochre, Winsor lemon, Scarlett Lake, Quinacridone rose or alizarin, Cobalt blue, French Ultramarine blue). I use an art alternative palette which hold twelve colors with lids. Any palette with large mixing area is good. Paper - 140Lb cold press or rough paper on a block, in a journal or if separate sheets (bring a non-absorbent support board slightly larger than your paper) Suggest 8x10 – 11x14”. Recommend artist grade: Arches or Fabriano. Sketch journal for thumbnails (I like Strathmore’s toned papers tan or grey) Use either a water-soluble graphite stick or watercolor pencils (2 browns plus white or 2 greys + white). Also a good place to take notes. Mechanical pencil Kneaded eraser Water container (collapsible cup or small jar) Brushes at a minimum ¼-1/2 flat wash brush #10 or larger round brush Liner or Rigor brush Scrubber brush Old toothbrush Misc Paper towels or tissues Small spray bottle with water (that gives a fine mist) Kitchen sponge without scratchy surface Clips or masking tape to hold paper to board (not needed if using a watercolor block) Bag to transport your supplies. Course Description:
Students will create paintings in watercolor inspired by their travel photos or sketches. Kathy will start each class with a demonstration, then assist students individually and offer critiques (if desired). Prior watercolor experience highly encouraged; this is NOT a beginning class. Returning students will build on skills previously developed. Bring your current watercolors (warm and cool of each primary) and supplies, an assessment will be done to determine if additional items are needed.

Artist Statement:
I work in watercolor, acrylic and oil; my favorite is watercolor. I love the freedom this medium provides and how the paints react to different surfaces and the way I manipulate my brush. The medium is very transportable. It allows me to travel with a minimum of supplies across the globe, to a local park or garden to paint outdoors. Working in nature, heightens all my senses that then take hold in my paintings. In addition to the beautiful landscape in front of me; I like to capture the sound of the birds and insects chirping, the soft breeze on the back of my neck, the smell of the saltwater and the taste of local foods into my paintings. Although some of my outdoor paintings are finished works, many are studies. I take the information I gathered onsite and incorporate them into my studio paintings.
