Instructor Bio:

Corey Barksdale is a nationally recognized African American visual artist and muralist based in Atlanta, Georgia. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, he was immersed in art from an early age, influenced by his grandmother, a quilt artist, and his mother, who had a keen eye for design. This familial environment nurtured his passion for storytelling through visual mediums.

Barksdale earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Atlanta College of Art in 1994. His artistic style is deeply rooted in abstract expressionism, drawing inspiration from artists like Jasper Johns, Clyfford Still, and Willem de Kooning. He also holds a profound appreciation for African American art history, influenced by masters such as Romare Bearden, Aaron Douglas, John Biggers, and William Tolliver.

Over the past two decades, Barksdale has established himself as one of Atlanta’s most sought-after muralists and fine artists. His work is characterized by vibrant colors and themes that celebrate African American culture, music, and community. Notable projects include murals for the Atlanta BeltLine, the City of Pittsburgh, and Suwanee, Georgia.

In addition to public art, Barksdale’s illustrations have been featured in various media, including the children’s book The Night Before Freedom, published by Random House.  His artwork has also appeared in films and television shows such as Get OutSuperfly, and Atlanta.

Barksdale’s commitment to his craft and community is evident in his efforts to use art as a means of storytelling and cultural expression. His pieces often reflect themes of unity, resilience, and the rich tapestry of African American heritage.
