Instructor Bio:
Joyce Ryan is a sculptor, jewelry artist, and educator with a lifelong passion for creativity and making. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in sculpture, Joyce began her career as an exhibit’s designer at the St. Louis Museum of Science and Natural History. While working there, she earned her MFA in graphic design from Washington University.
Her journey has taken her through the world of animation and visual effects, co-founding a studio with her husband and later serving as Director of Creative Services at Time Arts, Inc., where she helped develop high-end software for animation. Joyce also pioneered the first computer graphics courses at Washington University’s School of Fine Arts and later shared her passion for animation at the Atlanta Art Institute, where she served as both instructor and Chair of the Media Arts and Animation Department.
A Corel “Painter Master,” Joyce authored Animating with Painter IX and has been featured in the Painter Wow! book series. Over the past two decades, she has blended traditional craftsmanship with digital innovation, designing sculpture and jewelry through metalsmithing, ZBrush, and 3D printing. Most recently, she taught professional jewelers at Jamie Turner Studios in Austin, Texas.
Joyce is also an accomplished beader and wire artist. Her Natural History Collar was featured in Showcase 500 Beaded Jewelry by Lark Crafts. She currently teaches wire wrapping, wire weaving, and beading at venues including the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia and the Chastain Arts Center. Her classes are welcoming and hands-on, designed to encourage creativity in beginners and experienced makers alike.
